how to start up living plants

how do i change my tank in to living plants etc.. i want my fishies to have a good home that is natural.. and how does it work, what do i have to do to make it work?

a good flouresent light strip and some plants should start you off.... I would check the garden section of the fourm, good info there....I started with potted plants and they are doing well....I also grew some bulbs and they took forever to sprout but 4 out of six did and within a week one was so big I transferred it to my 55 gallon where a snail promptly "mowed" it down.....but you need 2 watts per gal as a general rule. have fun

now this might sound stupid but do i keep gravel in it or change it to sand i'm really new at this so i don't know anything

i think sand is easier for the roots to get in but i like gravel but i may be wrong

I have tons of plants in my tank- and I have gravel...they have rooted down just fine...so, gravel does work...
