I've got crabs.
OK then; I mean I have a couple of Malaysian red claw crabs that I added into my tank to get stuck into algae and loose food on the floor. One of them sits on top of the sponge filter most of the time and i can see him eating something so I guess he's doing what he was bought for.
If you fancy trying them they are fish friendly.
Another point. You have a double sponge filter. Why not just cover one sponge at a time for a week in situ with black polythene to starve the algae, then do the same with the next one
