How To-----old Filter/powerhead?

This filter/pump is older and I am not familiar with it.....I have a what i believe is a powerhead/filter, I am not sure how it works.....It is a pump that sets in a clear resevoir and has what I believe has 2 candycane shaped tubes inlet/outlet.....anyway how do i get the water into the resevoir to be filtered.....Kevin

I have it put away, It is pretty much like my newer filter, but there is no pick up tube attached to the resevoir itself it used these candy cane shaped inlet/pick up tubes instead.(they are not affixed to anything, just hang into the resevior from the tank) ....The whole filtering system hangs on the back of the tank, but the impeller is on the bottom of the pump that sets inside the resevoir, can't figure out how the water gets from the tank into the resevoir to be filtered.....The pump/powerhead is independent of the resevior......
