how to lower ph with peat.

hi all. i want to put peat in water to lower the ph. can some1 give me instructions on wot to do first.

If you have an external filter you put in the bottom basket(furthest away from the impeller so none if it gets caught). Not sure about an internal filter.

Does it whack out the chemistry to change the water then? If it is drops the PH, wouldn't it then spike when you added water? Would you then need to drop the PH a little everytime you added water or would it be negligable?
