At my local lake there are abundant Brook Silversides and I kept 5 or so in a 30 gallon tank with a few of my oddballs. They only lasted about 2 months. I am really interested in kepping this species yet I do not really know what I am doing. Can anyone give me a few pionters?

Labidesthes sicculus likes clean open water with a little current and high Oxygen levels, stresses easily and tolerates pollution badly. Surface feeders for the most. Keen jumpers. In the wild, they rarely live 2 years. I'm afraid I don't know much more then that really - they don't sound like an ideal tank species.

Forget it!

They are not good aquarium fish due to its fussy about its water. They always fallen to diseases such as fungus and many things. Think them as chocolate gourami (they died like flies). And very few people kept the silversides in aquarium. Plus once they spawned, they died. So its best to leave these fish in their water and not in aquarium.

They are lousy tankmates with any fishes, unless the tankmates were too lazy and don't move very much like twig cat. IMO, don't try collecting them unless you want babysitting the silversides 24/7. You starting to scare me.
