how to keep a fishtank from smelling?

what causes a fish tank to smell and what can prevent it from smelling?

just general things(not specificly for my tanks just tanks in general)

I'm not really sure what the causes of stench are, but I think changing the carbon in your filter helps remove a lot of the smell.

A full cycled tank should smell, but not a rotten kind of smell

Mine only has a odor when the algae gets going.

Yep, algae and old filter cartridges cause mine to smell. I guess decaying food/ fish would also do it... but I don't leave 'em in long enough to find out.

all mine have a slight odor. Slightly fishy maybe hard to describe.

mine smell like axe body spray...very pleasant..

Mine smell kind of "creeky". Which is a good thing I guess . I don't think it's unpleasant at all.

rotting plant life but ive noticed that all plants make my aquarium smell, rotting or other wise. needless to say I remove the rotting ones.

I've noticed that a tank only starts to smell like an aquarium once it has cycled, before then it doesn't. But it's not a rotting smell normally...
