Just reposting with different title... Could someone please tell me how to euthanize a cory with oil of cloves??

Many thanks

My other half does ours.
He puts several drops of oil of cloves in a cup with some tankwater and shakes it about to mix.
He then puts the fish in and when it stops moving (quite quickly) he stirs round with a spoon.
When the fish appears to be dead, we freeze it overnight just to be sure.
Grim, but it seems to be quick and effective.
Good luck

the most humane way of dealing with your sick fish is to place the fish in water so it doesnt gasp. the bag or bowl should be placed in the freezer. the enzymes that control consciousness are slowly inactivated causing the fish to go to sleep. this method is recommended by many vets. it will cause no suffering to the fish :good: ps. im sorry you have to lose a fish

Just put a load of clove oil in. He seemed dead so i added more just to be sure and he started swimming  He's lying still again. Don't know how to tell if he's dead anymore though so I think i'm going to leave him in there and just keep adding more oil of cloves to make sure he's dead. Either way I guess he's sedated now?!

I didn't read your messages until after. I have been reading conflicting views. I did the clove oil method. He's been still for over 10 mins and his gills aren't moving so I guess he's dead. I'll leave him in there for a few hours. I thought it was the best way as I have read it's a sedative for fish so figured even if i did get it wrong he wont be suffering!

Thanks for the advice though.

I don't know if it was the right thing to do but after the cloves I filled the cup with ice. He's definitely dead.

Thanks for your advice, it's so great having a forum like this so you can be more confident about what you're doing!

For future reference, please do not freeze larger fish to death. If they are capable of feeling pain (which I belive they do) then freezing likely to be very painful for the fish. [topic="207212"]This topic[/topic] in the scientific section indicates that the fish remain consious while they slowly freeze from the inside out for several hours before their bodies finaly shut down  IMO, for small fish, a hard knock to the head is the best route to go, very quick, little suffering, and a tidy way of doing things. Clove Oil would be best for larger fish, if you are too squemins to drive a nail/needle into the fishes brain.

Personally I think the best way for small to average sized fish is decapitation. That way you know the fish wont suffer too much.

I don't think that i could give a fish a whack over the head... nor can I be able to decapitate a fish...

From a fishing point of view, I've found that if a small fish has gorged the hook to the point of causing it intolerable suffering (usually greedy perch) or if I'm catching trout and I get a decent one to take home. Then a swift hard blow to the back of the head with a priest (usually made of horn/wood or metal) is enough to send them on their way.

I know its a bit gruesome but I know that its quick and the fish is definately dead.
