I'm so indescisive that it has taken me THIS long to decide what on earth I'm going to do with that empty 20 gallon in my garage. I'm plotting something now, but I'm not sure how to do it.

Could I divide it into 4 parts and give all of my bettas a 5 gallon home? If so, how? My parents are being very picky about money, I wouldn't need to heat and filter it for bettas, would I? My room is very warm, probably about 76. I would do lots of water changes. How often and how much water would I need to change if it was unfiltered?

This is the article I used:

I divided my 18 gallon (30"x12"x12") into 5 sections, roughly 3 gallons for each betta. It worked great! They rarely flare at each other, also. I'm doing a 10-20% water change each day, and every three days I'll vacum the bottom for poop and such. I have marbles and rocks at the bottom, no gravel though. Each betta gets an ornament of some kind and a silk plant. And there is no filter or heater in the tank. So far its working great (I've only had it set up for a day though! LoL)

Sorry to bring this back up, it was quite burried, but I might be setting things up today and I would really like to know if I need a heater and a filter. (4 fish will be in it, 3 males and a female. Room is a consistant 70-76 year round, i would perform frequent water changes.)

I would say yes to needing a heater, since it is likely that your temp would be under 75 at times, which is the minimum that most people say a betta should have. I have a 10 gallon that is unfiltered, with frequent water changes and gravel vaccuming, I think it would be fine.

should i make the heater like, its own little section, or put it in with one of the fish?

I would say just in with one of the fish. My divided ten gallon has a heater in the back of one of its compartments and it seems to be fine.
