I have a 10 gal tank and i want to put sand for the substrate instead of the riverstone i have in their now. If i do use sand how do i clean the sand, and i currently have a whisper powerfilter, is it true that the whisper filter wont b good with the sand? :hyper:

I don't know about the filter but I use a gravel cleaner and hover it over the sand to pick up the poo. It works a treat. If some sand goes through it, you can just collect it from the bucket afterwards.

If sand gets in your filter, its time to buy a new filter. Another drawback to sand!!!!!

Get another filter or dont use sand. I myself had a whisper filter and DID NOT know about sand, I set up a small tank with sand as substrate. After effect, I did not have my whisper filter anymore :/

I've had sand get into 4 of my filters and just washed them out and raised the intake enough to keep it from becoming a problem again. It's not that bad unless you don't remove the sand from the impeller area.

It just takes 1 or 2 grain of sand to get into the motor and ruin it. Just not worth the risk to me.

i havent cleaned my sand sinse i got my 3 peppered catfish but sand is simple to clean gust get a tube and start a siphon and move it over the dirt about 2cm away as u dont wanna loose that much sand. the filter thingy i'm not sure about but it should be fine if sand is getting in ur filter then move it futher away form the sand and clean it out, not get a new one we'er not rich u know.
