Hey since no one answered my previous question (you'll have to go and look as im not repeating it!) i went ahead with my plans and purchased the chichlids and they all seem fit and healthy (fighting, chasing each other and chewing their way through my water hyacinths).

I have three Birchardi's and want em to breed, so what do i need to do?
The water is pH8, hard and has a nitrate of >5 ppm. The tank is 6ft long 18" wide, coral gravel and decorated in stone and has lots of water hyacinth, so what do i do from here?

the only thing is to meet the conditions of the fish and wait, it's all you can do :) A couple of my hongi bred and there was only 1M and 1F in the tank with a PH of 7.6! Somtimes it's just crazy luck :)

Brichardi are easy to spawn. Your conditions are good, so just make sure there are some caves (flowerpots work great) or a sizeable rockpile, and they will do the rest. Being Tanganykan, they may take a while to mature depending on how old they are now. A year or more to maturity is not unreasonable, but they are worth the wait.

They are terrific parents, and once they start to reproduce, the older fry babysit for the next batches and so on, until they have filled your tank. They are a gorgeous fish, and a lot of fun to keep. Watch for the dominant male. No one gets in his way, and he will strut around like a peacock, afraid of nothing.

Good luck,
/Kris
