How should I clean the impeller?

I have to clean the power head, what is the correct way to clean the impeller?

Scrub it with an old toothbrush. Don't get it hot, (i.e. rinse it in hot water/boil it etc.). Many impellors are magnetic, heat reduces, (eventually destroys), the magnetism.
