How old should a betta be before it is sold at a pet store. I bought a female, and she doesn't look more than 7 weeks old(according to all the growth charts).

feamles in petstores always look younger than they really are becuase they're so underfed and usually not well taken off.

It depends on the breeder before the fish arrives at the store.

Most pet store Betta are 6 months to a year and a half old.

Stunting, apparently, has become quite popular with breeders. My Mason is a stunted fellow... as were many of the other fish at the store.

It annoys me to no end, really.

I know what u mean. She was put in with about 4 diff. species and they were all at least twice her size. I had to take her. My wife got very angry seeing as I have alot of fish. But the betta has a blue body red fins with some green in the tail. So you see I had to rescue her.

are the female ur talkin about an inch or so long? because my lfs had them for a while and the sold out quick, i thoght they were to young but i guess they could of just been mailnurished..

Petco and Petcetera ones are usually about one year old and the ones I buy from the Rainforest Spectrum some of em submitted by bkk_group  gave me my first ever mustard gassy betty! They are bout 6 months old I guess.... ask bkk! He bred em!
