How Much Substrate?

I have a newer 55 gallon tank with 12 fish. I have about 3/4 inch of gravel. I want to add another color gravel because the white gravel is too bright. Can I add another 1/4 inch or so. I don't want too much waste accumulating under the gravel.

An inch shouldn't be a problem as long as you vacuum it regularly.

I have between 1-3" in a slope from front to back. Most of the muck rolls to the front for easy cleaning. I do a major gravel vac during water change but sometimes if it builds up during the week I have a battery operated vac which I just run along the front.....does a reasonable (not brilliant) job.
