I think gravel is 2 pounds per gallon but what is it for sand?

Most of the common formulas run between 1 and 2 pounds of gravel per gallon of tank capacity as a rough thumb rule. It does not matter what the material is, sand or gravel, when using that thumb rule. I often go closer to the 1 pound than to the 2 pounds end of the spectrum. I find that gives me plenty of substrate for all but the heaviest layer of substrate.

I found if you have cichlids you don't want to go to deep as they will try to dig to a hard bottom. If your sand is to deep the sand will just keep filling up the holes they dig. Maybe about 2 or 3 inches will do.
