Hey guys i am getting my new tank this thursday and am wondering how many lbs of sand i will be needing?

its a 220 72X24X30

I was thinking about either getting Pool filter sand or black Tahitian Moon Sand which do you guys think i should do?

I will be keeping some fronts and syno petricola in the tank... maybe some blue dolphines and such as well.

i'm not too sure about the exact weight. but you should probably be looking at enough sand to fill up about 0.5" to 1.5" of your tank floor.

My 55 gallon had a footprint of 48X13 and it took 1 -1/2 to 2 50 lbs bags of playsand to give it a good depth.

48 x 13 = 624 sq ft

Your footprint is 72X24, so...

72 x 24 = 1728 sq ft

1728 divided by 624 equals 2.8 (rounded). So you're looking at around 2.8 times the sand as my tank required. That translates to anywhere from 210 to 280 lbs of sand.

buy a few bags a throw it in... if u need more go get more :D

Dont be silly you do not need 127kgs of sand in a 6x2.

you need 22KG per 0.5 inches covered. if your going planted 2 inches is going to be needed.

I have about 60 KG in a 5ft by 20 inches. tank and its about deep enough. my sand was not cheap either..... cost a good 100 quid.........

I setup my 55 gallon this week and put in a 50 lb. bag, it gave me between 1 to 2 inches of pool sand (around 11.00 bag at renco) so I figure if you buy 6-7 bags of the sand you would certainly have enough, if you had to much you could always take it back. I want more in my tank not much but a little bit so I'll be syphoning out some from my 29 gal. that has 3-4 inches in spots to fill in the rest of my 55 or give me a good start.

I wish I had a 1728 square FOOT tank. That would be cool. Almost as big as my house. :hyper:
