After a terrible accident involving a missing filter guard and a Black Molly :rip: (please don't berate me, I've beaten myself up over this way more than anyone else can) I decided to go back to my LFS armed with new info re sizes of bristlenoses & found someone who didn't think that L144 indicated a total adult size of 14.4" (see previous post  ) and came home with an inch long pale cream bristlenose. After 2 weeks s/he (still too small to tell) is now bright yellow & fattening up nicely on a diet of tank algae & half an algae wafer per day (wafer shared reluctantly with 2 platies!)

Small BN is constantly snuffling about the tank munching but as the algae disappears I know I need to replace the difference somehow. There are no natural plants (had a snail infestation in the past, can't bear the thought of that happening again - ugh!) & I'm on the lookout for a small piece of bogwood. I've not tried cucumber/courgette yet but how much & how often should I be feeding? Don't want to overfeed and clog up the filter but on the other hand I don't want it to starve! Tummy is quite rounded & pudgy at the moment.

Cheers!

I find they don't eat cucumber or courgette until they are adults, but then they will destory it!!!

I don't feed my babies anything once they leave the cave? I have a 240ltr with around 60-80 babies of all sizes from 4 week to 5 months old and a breeding trio.

You can add algae pellets but your other fish will probably eat them however some will escape into the water and settle.

Bogwood is a must, he will love to nibble on it.

How big is your tank and how old?

I have 2, both about 1.5 inches long, and I face the same problem. I put in cucumber and I saw one land on it, suck it for a few seconds them swim off as if it were any other ornament in the tank. I cleaned all the algae off of my plastic plant and hand root thing this morning because it was so thick it was breaking off into the water making it look terrible. But the rocks are clean of algae thanks to the BN's, as is the large big of bogwood I have.

Tiger barbs eat any pellets I drop in there before they even reach the gravel.

What can I do?

They will be fine, i've added 15 babies and a 5 month old BN to a 2 month old tank and they are growing fine.

They will be eating the thin layer of bacteria you can't even see

Tank is small, about 40l but is very well established; has been up and running for 2/3 years with low fish stocks. Currently it just has the BN & 2 platies. I was planning on replacing Molly <sigh> but I think that's its limit. Will upgrade in due course, but for now this one's doing just fine.

I did have quite a 'healthy' algae population but in just 2 weeks its been demolished - even the black furry stuff :) Little BN has a voracious appetite for one so small!

Have a different experience from Tacklebury: mine were eating courgette, peas and sprouts from the day they lost their yolk sac pretty well.

Mad, mine are not interested what so ever! I've tried all kinds but they seem happy to graze on the algae alone.

Maybe as i don't like my greens neither do they!
