As some have stated. Bacteria only grows on the top half really so adding more would just be for your preferance. I have about an inch worth of gravel in my tank. Dont want to take up to much room for the fish.
I like to use as little as it takes to bury decorations like plants into, generally an inch is fine, sometimes more, depending. The less you use, the easier it tends to be to keep clean.
