So, tonight I will be making a start on my new tank.

Dimensions are 48" x 12" x 18.5"

Is there an optimum amount of gravel to use (in terms of depth)?
How much gravel should I buy to put in it?

And the next question relates to adding the plants in to the equation - should I do this as I add the gravel?

LT,
thanks for the response.
What is the advantage of sand over gravel?

Easier to maintain as poo stays on top.
Plants get a better grip
Nutrients used for plants dont leach into the water readily

There is a whole discussion pinned somewhere on this forum that goes into depth.......

I used to use gravel but its so difficult to keep clean, i had an under gravel filter on one tank and that was just awful. now i have sand in all my tanks and not only goes it look nicer its cleaner too, and the cories and plecs seem to love it. if your going to go for sand its probably a cheaper alternative too, buy a big bag of play sand (mine cost £3.50 and was more than enough for a four foot tank) and don't forget to rinse it well before you put it in the tank, then give it time to settle before you turn your filter back on.
