How much are Ph Kits?

ummm.....I am in sydney and these kits go for about $15.00AU for a standard ph test kit (between 5.5 ~ 7.5)

I always thought that the absolute minimum for test kits is pH, Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte.

but others could just say the first three from above.

In my opinion, there are three tests that could be called "more important" than pH tests; ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

Here in the US, pH tests by themselves run about $8-$10.

However, if you currently have no tests at all, I'd suggest looking into a master kit, which will end up being a lot cheaper. Take a look at this master kit. As you can see, you can get four or five tests for basically the price of two.

just curious....which ones are more important? I'd like to know since i only have the four i mentioned above.

IMO the ammonia test is the most important as it is the first indicator that something is happening in the tank either during cycling or after. The nitrate test is the next one because once the tank is cycled and running it indicates if there is a problem with the water conditions or if the bioload is too much for the tank. If the nitrates rise quickly then you have one of the above problems. HTH :)

PH kit here is about £3.50

I think NitrAte is the most important kit to use once the tank is cycled, although the others should still be kept around incase there's a problem.

after you have cycled by far the most inportant kit of all is nitrate IMO.
all are important to start with.. later down the line you will probarbly only test for ammonia or nitrite if you encounter a problem... well i do anyway ;)

Hi there,
Pets at Home do a complete kit for about £16-£17
This contains:
2x PH testing kits (1 for high ph and 1 for low ph - if you get a ph reading on the low ph kit you need to do a second ph reading using the high ph kit)
1x ammonia test
1x nitrIte test (this is a two bottle test)
1x general hardness test
it also contains 4x test tubes
cards to work out the readings
and of course full instructions and explanitions as to why the tests should be done and what to do if your tests read too high or too low.
Good luck
I agree that the ammonia and nitrIte tests have to be the most important as these are both toxic and can and will kill the fish if levels are too high.
Ph is also important this has to be checked regularly also.
Good luck
Kaz

Just for info, the kit that kaz petts described is almost certainly the Freshwater Master Test Kit by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals. It's the same kit pictured in the link I gave above. It's a pretty good starter kit.
