How many tropical fish can i fit in a 60L tank i am thinking of getting:

6 Guppies
12 Neon Tetras (offer at the shop)
2 Dwarf African Frogs
2 Apple Snails

i'll do the research later if they can all live in the same living requirements, i just want to know...is that too much?

no as long as your filter is strong you can have way more than that in my opinion

put it this way, i am going to buy a jewel rekord 60- 54 litres and plan to stock with

2darf gouramis
6tiger barbs?
8 tetras- havnt decided which
4 guppies
few clown loaches

and then i think i can still have about 5-10 more smaller fish and 3-6 medium sizes ones

people on this forum told me that a single goldfish needs 120 litres so dont take advice o stocking from most of them, they might know a bit more but in my experience as long as your filter is top dog you can fill to your hearts content

nice selection there, ain't tiger barbs vicious?

i was asking cos in the garden centre they like have 80 tetras in a smaller tank than the one i have so i gotta think of more fish then i guess. maybe a Siamese fighting fish

male fighter fish go for other fish with long fins, also the long fins are a tempation for things like a small group of tiger barbs
tiger barbs are not vicious as long as they are in a mixed sex group about 6+, this way they spend most of the time displaying to the other sex not fin nipping other fish

well in this petsathome book it says that a male fighter fish will only attack guppies of the same colourization ^_^

and can you suggest anything to go with my collection? :)

55Litre tank and a 'few' clown loaches that grow to about 12" fully grown?

to the original poster, I'd do some research if I were you, its true that goldfish require 90-100Litres for the first one, then around 40 litres for each additional goldfish, due to the fact they get large and are big waste producers.

i'd be only be getting small fish largest 13 cm maybe, and not interested in goldfish, tell me do plecos come in small sizes? (they the ones that suck the glass?)

I think bristlenose plecs get to around 4", but I cant be sure. Theres a page on this forum that will tell you for sure though

I'd say this is a nice stocking list for a 60L, though you could probably get away with more (not loads more mind you)

Careful about listening to advice like this. I wouldn't put a single clown loach in a tank this size, let alone a few. I wouldn't keep guppies in a group of 4. I wouldn't keep guppies with tigers either. Also, if you're planning on this stocking with the standard juwel filter tower, expect some trouble - although it's not a bad filter, IMO it doesn't work too well until very mature, and has a low flow rate.

Shops get away with this because their tanks are usually highly filtered, and the fish don't stay in there like that for long. They usually tolerate quite a few deaths too, which you shouldn't.

Depends very much on the individual temperament of the fighter. I'd avoid keeping them with guppies at all personally (guppies are pretty lame too... :p )

I wouldn't put anything over about 4in long in a tank of that size. You do get small plecos, though I couldn't tell you which they are. I would recommend otocinclus (dwarf catfish)
"a small (2") algae-eating fish which is perfect for the tropical freshwater aquarium. It is a diligent worker, doesn't have an aggressive bone in its body, and is fun to watch interact with others in a group"
I have 5 in my tank, and they're great characters, and decent algae eaters too.

To stock a tank like yours (which i'm actually in the process of now...) i'm going for a Siamese fighter, 5 or so otos, 12 or so porkchop rasbora or cherry barbs, maybe a small group of khuli loaches, and a couple of nerite snails.

I don't mean to offend AdAndrews, I just think someone new to the hobby needs to hear the differing schools of thought out there! Just my opinion

Also, in most cases, the water in the shop's display tanks isn't all the water in the system. What looks like five 20 gallon display tanks might actually be part of the same water body, hooked up to a 100 gallon sump filter in the back room. You can get away with ridiculous temporary stocking levels that way because even though you only have 100 gallons visible, you have 200 gallons of available stocking. This is not a normal (and usually not cost or space effective) setup for home systems, may not be good for long term keeping, usually reserved for marine tanks and exceedingly large freshwater tanks.

thanks a million....Million i really like how you took the time to answer all my questions, now that i have a clear picture of how many fish that can possibly be in a tank my size i think i can give this topic a rest..

thanks to everyone that help answer my questions :)

Well thanks for the thanks! I really appreciate such courtesy :good:

Best of luck with fishkeeping, and don't hesitate to ask if you have more queries
