Hiya again
I have a 25UK G tank currently have 4 green barbs, 4 rainbowfish, 6 tetras

I really need bottom/alage feeders now and ive read that otto' s are prob best as i would like to keep them small so can I have say 4 of them?
Also i want to add more barbs as mine fight a lot and maybe that will help (again thanks to this forum) so what another 4 of them. Is that me maxed out if i go for those suggestions
If not then maybe a pretty solitary fish? Types?

Hi,

That's a fair sized tank so I expect you will be able to get something at least. What kind are your tetras and rainbowfish? Different tetras and rainbowfish get to different sizes do you'll need to know this before you can decide.

How long has your tank been going, is it cycled etc?

:)

I ve had 7 mths now and so yeah cycled, right here comes the problem...
I cant remember(how rubbish is that), Ive checked on internet and fish books but cant seem to find.
But saying that I have 2 types of rainbow fish and i think one was described as red the others are ????? (I remember it was not a real word as i know it..maybe a place) rainbowfish.....how crap
And the tetras i thought were ruby nosed but there not they have red above their eyes and a bronze fleck at the end of their bodies
I am getting digi pics done soon so i can post em for the experts.......

LOL

OK, I'll have a look in one of my books...

Red Rainbowfish is Glossolepis incisus

Random Info:

http://aquadex.info/fish/Glossolepis_incisus.cfm
http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Fishindx/glo-inci.htm
http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/otherfis.../redrainbow.htm

It seems they get pretty big, around 5" and need 25US at least - so that's ok.

Now for the one that sounds like a place *lol*.

How about:

- Boesmani, Melanotaenia boesemani
- Lake Sentani Chilatherina sentaniensis
- Eastern, Melanotaenia splendida
- Lake Kutubu, Melanotaenia lacustris

There are more if those are no good.

Could the tetras be African red-eye tetra? They have the red above the eye although I am not sure o the bronze flec.

I really hope I have helped!!

*phew*

has a rest!

Man you have really taken time, I really appreciate that! The LFS where i got the rainbowfish told me they were all young and hence have not developed full colours , my alleged red ones dont look anything like them pictures you so kindly linked.

Can you suggest a bible for aquarists looking to identify ?

Thanks again

Don't worry about it! I like to learn, it's easier when I have something to learn about.

Maybe the red rainbows are female? Are they more silver than red? Female reds are silver. I saw small reds in the lfs the other day who were really red so I'm not sure it's an age thing.

Cool!! I am not knowledgable, I would not have known most of that stuff had I not looked it up. Good thing is, I will remember it now.

Always nice to help out a fellow Scot (although I didn't notice you were before!)

:)

Edit: As for books I have:

Bailey, M and Sandford, G. (1996)
The New Guide to Aquarium Fish - I got the rainbow info there

The Bottom Dwellers
Tetra Press

Fox, K. M. (1992)
The Tropical Fishkeeper's Handbook - Not very good to be honest

Mills, D. (1986)
You and Your Aquarium - I really like this one

I usually use the Internet to be honest but the first and last books are really good too. Especially the first.
