Was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a generic calculation to use when working out how many fish a tank could hold. I have kept fish before, but the last tank I had was a species specific tank devoted to neon tetra's. But I had those guys for quite a while and can't remember how I figured out how many could fit in there Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me.

A rough, general rule for an estimation is 1" of fish per gallon of (us) water.
But larger fish such as plecs and loaches dont count and you need to make your own judgement.

Thanks for all the help guys, think I've cracked it now.

bettas: Dont actually have the tank yet mate, I know how many fish I want so I was waiting for an answer to decide how large a tank I should get. Gave the last one away when I moved.

Yeah i use the one inch guideline or depending on the aggresive nature of the fish will decide how many fish i can put in the tank.
