How Many Fish Could I Realistically Have?

Got a 120litre tank and I'm thinking of stocking ideas but I'm wondering if other people could give me an idea of how many fish I could realistically have. I've got some ideas of what I'd like for example peppered corys, a plec, rummy nose tetras, neons, Glowlight danios, hatchet fish, male dwarf gouramis and glass catfish. But realistically how many species and numbers could I have without overstocking.
Cheers in advance for your response =]

If it were my tank, what I would do is:-

8 peppered cories
10 rummynose (or 12 neons)
6 hatchets
1 Dwarf Gourami.

I wouldn't have any Glowlight Danios, although they are quite small, they again need to be in groups, but because they're so fast, they would need quite a long tank, to be able to stretch their legs, as it were. If you go for a plec, be careful what species you get, as many plec species grow huge.

This is practically what i was going to say :) if indeed you do go for a plec, a Bristle nose would be well suited

Well, great minds, etc...... :good:

Peppered corys are actually better in cooler waters, they are more temperate fish than tropical.

There are dozens more species of cory more suitable for tropical setups. What about pandas?

We've got some pitbull plecs in my work (I work in a pet shop) but I've got my pick of fish and can order in any I need. Been asking customers about their tanks and so far I've had some interesting choices!! Thanks for your replies :)

I like shoaling fish and livebearers myself. a few corys wouldn't go amiss as bottom dwellers.

<sarcasm>My LFS says I can have as many fish as I like in my 90L tank so skys your limit in a 120L</sarcasm>

Seriously, take a look around at fish you like the look of and see how big they grow.
Then check they are compatable with other species of fish you may be interested in.
Find out the numbers they should be kept in i.e, neons should be kept in numbers of at least 10 so they feel safe and secure but they can be nippy.
Most live bearers reproduce like rabbits and should be kept to a ratio of 1 male to 3 females to spread out the 'attention' the females get and also stop the males from squabbling.

The best thing you can do is find out about the needs of the fish you like BEFORE you buy them.
Working in a pet store this shouldn't be a problem.
Unless you work at PaH that is....

#41####.... I missed the <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags out from the above line....

I've researched the sizes and combinations and that's not a problem- I was more looking for some nice combos. Things people have tried and had a nice community with.
But let's just deal with the fact that you seem to hate PAH so much. I take it you're one of these people who would never trust such a place because they treat their fish so badly and they give wrong advice? Yeah thought so.
Incase you hadnt noticed, I work there.
So if you'd like to elaborate on your last comment is be more than happy to put any concerns to bed.
I'm noticing from reading a lot of comments on other posts that there are some real snobs out there.

No snobs here, just people who care about fish & want the best for them
As for P@H there are good ones & bad ones, same with any chain.
I'm sure no offence was meant

I think you've taken my reply the wrong way but....

The fact that you work at pah and are asking for advice on stocking and saying that you've been asking customers about their tanks for stocking ideas doesn't fill me with confidence the next time i walk into a pah store.
Aren't customers meant to walk in the place you work and ask you for stocking advice?

I don't think pah treat fish, rabbits or any other animals badly.
I've bought fish from pah before and I still have them in my tank they are still as healthy today as the day i bought them but I would rather support my local independent pet shop. .

If the staff in pah knew as much about aquariums as they believe they do then I might shop there but as of now in my local pah they don't so I don't shop there.

I thought I'd given you good advice and i thought the other people who posted gave you very good advice.
Perhaps better than you'll get from any lfs or big chain store.

And yes. there are snobs in the hobby the same as in any hobby.
You just have to learn to ignore them :)

Ther are lots of opinions about stocking levels & different methods of calculating them, eg 1 inch of fish per gallon (very outmoded & wrong), fish per surface area (again a bit out of date now), etc.

Stocking is more about how willing you are to maintaine your tank with waterchanges than any other hard & fast rule. I do a 50% water change EVERY week so my stock list is very near, if not past, the upper limit for my tank & my fish are all healthy & happy.
