Hi I have 8x harlequins and 5 x copper harlequins in my tank. I was wondering if I could keeep more than 1 dwarf cichlid in this size tank? I was planning on getting a pair of bolivian rams and maybe a pair of appisto's. My main concern is that the tank could be to small. Also I have a gH of 10 which I think I may need to lower in order to increase the range of fish I could keep, whats the best way of doing this?

GH of 10 what? ppm or °? And what is your KH? What is your pH? Do you have bogwood and plants in there? What are your tap water readings (after it has been left to sit for 24 hours in a glass)?

If it was my tank, I would stock with the following:
8 harlequins
8 copper harlequins
1 pair rams OR 1m 2f cockatoos OR equivalent
6 Otos OR 6 Corys

I would advise against having more than one species of cichlid, although there is a chance that it might work.

I'll have to check my test kit when I get home, I was a bit confused to what unit the results where. I'll test the kH aswell. Yes iHave plants and bogwood, is it the potential aggression between different types of cichlids or the size of tank which makes you recommend me not to have more than 1 kind? thanks for the replies

Hi only just tested my stats here they are:
gH-10 drops 200mg/L(ppm) as CaCO3
kH-7 drops 70mg/L 70mg/L(ppm) as CaCO3
nitrate 20-50 was hard to tell but was on the 20ppm side rather than 50.
I tool these with nutrafin liquid tests, this is my tank water not my tap water by the way.
So any ideas on comatible fish? thanks

Is your tank well planted?

Yes here is a pic below:

I know half the tank is quite bare but I could rearrange the plants and bogwood to cover more area with plants, or I could just add some mor.

I think the tank looks good the way it is. It gives them some area for hiding but also gives them some swimming room. I think it would be best t stick to 1 type of cichlid if im honest. I would go for 4 Apistogramma agassizii (1male 3females) Or 5 Apistogramma panduro (1male 4females) Or you could go for something a little different and get a pair of Red breasted acara.

I'd be tempted to make a slate cave but that's just me, i'm slate crazy at the moment

But as said above, I would stick to one species, apistogramma agassizi, hongsloi or cacatuoides but I am leaning myself, towards Hongsloi (love their coloring and would look fab in that tank)

thanks for the ideas I'll have a look at them now, do you think they'll be ok witht he tank parameters?

tbh, the hardness etc, I have no clue about but my apisto cacatuoide is living happily in a Ph of 8 (water is hard around my area). I suppose, as long as the ammonia and nitrites are at a 0, you should be fine

well the pH is 7 so that should be ok, just looked at some profiles and they said the hongsloi can tolerate harder water, I might have to invest in a little slate cave aswell or make one!

this is definitely the cutest fish! only 2.5 cm lol

Very nice and they probably would work but good luck finding them. There are loads of different types of apisto but very few are imported.
