how many corys could you put maximum in a 55 gallon tank? there wont be any other fish at all in there,
ONLY CORIES... maybe some clowns to... OK THEN CORYS AND CLOWNS...

in a 55G how about 3 Clowns and 10-12 corys?

make sure you have fine substrate if you are just having loaches and corys, sand or fine quartz gravel is best.

I think you could put a few more than that in thier. Hell I have that many in my 40 gallon. I would say around 20. I think they would be very cute all by thierselves in a 55 gallon tank. I want to see pictures when you get them.. :D

would they be fine with no plants? and just a few caves, and the rest of the bottom just some nice fine sand, so they have lots of places to glide around and sift, and i can watch them without annoyances of lots of plants in the way, plus in the pet stores near me, they sell 55 gallons that are super shallow. and very long, so they are only about 11 inches high and a million feet long... would this stree em out with no plants?

That shallow tank would be perfect size for them! And if you can tell me where you live so i can come buy one of these tanks that would be great :D

If you plan on just having corys as Angel_Lady says, but i would start off with less than 20 as you will always find more corys that you like, or something like porthole catfish (a relation of corys) which are very nice indeed!

A 55 could hold on it's own probably 25 or so cories on the bottom, provided they are given enough places to hide. I have nearly 20 in a 30g and they do fine with plenty of hiding.

i live in hawaii... i think those fish tanks are only made here... -_-
anyways, but since the tank is so long and so shallow, wouldnt i be able to fit more then 20 in it? whats the max number... im guessing the tank is maybe... 6-7 feet long? i dont know... its long i know that.. :look:

With a bigger, flatter surface area like that, you might go as far as 40 but it also depends on the species and if they reproduce. Most species range in the 3"-4" area I think but some only get to maybe 1.5"-2" plus you should take into account other fish you have in the tank. You also lose some of the bottom to decorations and plants the fish need to hide in and around so they're not stressed out. They can and will squeeze together in some small areas but they seem to like it better with bigger caves or tunnels that give them some swimming room to hide in.

Hi collared_drifter :)

I love the way your tank sounds. I think it would be a wonderful home for corys.

It's the loaches I would be concerned about. They are active fish and they do get very large. I don't think they will be a very good combination. They would be very disruptive to the corys peaceful nature.

If you just had corys, I'm sure they would love that long tank. I keep a lot of mine in 4' long 55 gallon tanks and it's great watching them swim the full length of it. A longer tank would even be better for them.

What is the nitrate of your tap water? When it comes to stocking with corys, that's the critical factor. While you can add filtration to handle the ammonia and nitrites, nitrates have to be removed through water changes. If your nitrates are at zero from the tap, you can be comfortable with going somewhat over the inch per fish guideline. But if they are over that level to start with, the more fish you add, the more water changes you will always have to do to keep the nitrates down to acceptable levels.

The large surface area is great for absorbing oxygen, and corys do well with that, but eventually you will find that if you have too many fish, you will get tired of doing the additional water changes needed to keep them in an overstocked tank. :D

my tap water's nitrates level is at zero, wih no chlorine, floride, or ANY of that awasome stuff :hey:... just wonderful pure water from the havens of the mountain springs.. :fun:
im also thinking of adding a whole bunch of different species of botias, and loaches, i just want ALL bottom feeders... and in my expeirince botias and laches inhabit the lower middle and top levels of the tank, so the tank would be VERY active... so it wouldnt look just like a bunch of ants on the bottom of the tank...
i dont think that laoches would really bother corys... i keep them together all the time... and they dont seem to mind sharing caves...
by the way, this is a future project, that wont tank place for a very long time...

Loaches will become very active and swim all over the tank once they get settled in. My YoYo loaches hid quite a bit for a week or so. Once they learned that no one will hurt them, they became very active and swim all over the place all the time. Ive heard they chase other fish, but I haven't seen any of this. I am watching them very closely and they are growing quickly. They even swim along the glass with my cories and porthole catfish. I got them when they were very young and they have been with cories most their life, so hopefully they wont bother them.

Good Luck

EDIT: Like Bunjiweb said, Porthole Catfish are great if you can find any. I got mine 2 months ago and havent seen any lately. I think they are seasonal.
