Hi all,

I've been interested in getting some amano shrimp for my planted 65-gallon tank.

How many should I get? How much bioload for shrimp?

Thanks in advance!

Though you may find they poop a lot, they don't make much of an impact on the filter.
I'd say maybe 5 or 7. What fish are in the 65 gallon? :good:

Marbled hatchets, brown-tailed pencils, white-finned rosy tetras, cardinals, farlowella acus (2), one stiphodon elegans goby, 6 kuhlis ;) , one female Apisto, one pair of Dicrossus Maculatus.

See any issues there? I've read that people have successfully kept Apistos with them - that was my main initial concern. I will be sure to get adults and not tiny babies.

Will be fine :good:
I was just thinking "65 gallon tank = big fish"

It's only 3-ft long, (a bit taller) so it would be harder to do larger fish, I think - maybe a couple slightly larger cichlids, like 4-5 inches, but any bigger and it wouldn't be enough room, I don't think. I love my little community of SA fish (+ kuhlis, cuz I love them too, and the goby for the same reason. ;) )

Cool - I'm excited to have some shrimp!

I have amanos and cockatoo apistos, and I've had them with bolivian rams in the past with no problems. My amanos were fully grown before going in the tank with the cichlids, I would imagine very tiny ones might be a risk though

Thanks so much for your input! That makes me feel even better. How many would you add to my tank? It's fully stocked with fish now.

I'll be sure to add larger ones. My favorite LFS was out of them - the other one I visited yesterday were maybe 3/4 inch long, so I thought I'd wait. I have one more store to try today. If they don't have any large enough or any at all, I think I may try online, though I've never had creatures shipped to me before - only plants.

Sounds like this person/site comes with high recommendations:

Anyone ordered from her before?

Ok, my LFS had them back in stock! I brought home 8 today and already love them!

I was worried about the fish bothering them, but all of the Cichlids have had a good, very curious look and left them alone, even the smallest one. (Phew!)

I'm now officially a shrimp fan and I've only had them about an hour... Hahaha

As an aside, I did contact the person above, Rachel, and she was super nice and helpful. I'd recommend her if anyone's looking for shrimp or anything else she carries.
