Hi,

Thinking of having a new consumer board fitted. Tank is a Juwel Rio 240. So as per title thread, "how long would it be Ok to have no power to tank (fish in maybe - maybe not.) If no fish it would just be plants - so assume not an issue ? If I have fish ?

Thanks in advance

If you prepare in advance, several hours are OK. Temperature is not a problem at the moment, winter would be different. The light is not a problem; even if the tank was planted the plants would not be affected by missing a day's light. That just leaves the filter.

If the tank is well planted, the filter being off won't be a problem as the plants will be doing most of the work anyway. But I would still take all the media out of the filter and leave it in the tank. Sponges will float. Maybe clean the filter a few days before so the media won't be messy.
If there are fish, feed them less for a couple of days then don't feed them at all on the day, then lightly for a couple of days afterwards. Keep an eye on ammonia and nitrite for a few days afterwards to be on the safe side.

Our electricity was off for 8 hours a few years ago while they did some work on the sub station. They told us in advance so I could prepare. And then I managed to leave the filter unplugged for a week in a well established tank with a lot of floating plants. On neither occasion did I see any ammonia or nitrite.

Edited for spelling

Thanks - puts my mind at rest.

You should do what im going to do and get a battery backup surge protector. (I found one for $44 with good reviews.) That way if power does go out you are able to still safely run your tank.

As Essjay said, just clean the filter a day or two before the power outage. On the day of the power outage, either put the filter media in the aquarium, or pour aquarium water through the filter every 30-60 minutes.

For external canister filters, you take the outlet/ return hose and put it in a bucket next to the filter. Let the bucket fill up with water. Then put the return hose back in the tank. Pour the bucket of water back in the tank.

For external hang on back (HOB) style filters, get a couple of litres of water from the aquarium and pour it into the HOB filter. This will add oxygenated water to help keep the bacteria alive and well.

For internal power filters, just clean them a few days beforehand and leave them in the tank. There will be plenty of oxygen in the water for them.
