As stated, the tank is 85 litres (roughly), with a Visi-therm 100w heater. How long should it take to get the water temp upto 24-25C?

It's been plugging away for about 16hrs now and it has only just broken into the 20's (room temp).

Is the heater under-powered? I can't see any of the fillaments lighting up, should they be?

For the record, I'm using an Eheim 2232 external cannister filter. The in-tank flow is directed at the bottom of the heater so as to circulate the heat around the tank.

Is it normal that it is taking this long to get up to temperature?

Did you fill it with cold water?

there's usually a little light on the heater than comes on when it's switched on and a dial to adjust the temperature you've got it set to heat too.

you can't trust the temp settings on the heater, they lie scnadalously so go by the temp that your thermometer is saying.

is the light staying on at the moment?

To the question "did I fill it with cold water." Yes I did, it was about 6C when it first went in.

The thermostat light is on, so i assume that it is aware that it needs to keep heating. I've set it to 26C overnight just to get it going, but it is still coming up short. Obviously I will give it time to keep plugging, but should it be taking this long?

yeah it can take a while from cold, is the room it's in quite cold as well?

Reasonably cold, yes. I'm happy to give it time, I just wanted to make sure that it was on the right track and not taking too long.

The only other thing that concerns me is that only one of the fillaments seems to be lighting up red. This surprised me, I thought they all would. Is this normal?

If the heater is away from any water movement it will take longer to heat, place the heater near the outflow to help circulate the heat better.

I have had a 4 footer take at least a day to get to a reasonable temp, learnt since then and use a combo of warm / cold water to fill large tanks now, as long as it is dechlor'd then there is no problem.

I do have the outflow pointed at the bottom of the heater. So it should be getting good circulation.

I'll be keeping an eye on it today.

is it not worth taking a couple of jugs or the watyer out and replacing with hot kettle water, even just a few kettles full will help get it to temp quicker
