How long does it take to stunt a fish?

I'm wondering if my clown loach can stil grow if a move him to a bigger tank? He's in a 20g right now and has been for 6 months. I'm getting a 55g probably by Xmas. I'm gonna get him some buddies once I get it.

My understaning of clown loaches are they are very slow growers,
you should be ok untill you have the large tank.
