a couple of years. The lump is caused by a build up of fatty tissue and is used as a food reserve during lean times. The fish must reach maturity and then be fed really well.
It isn't recommended to overfeed fish and deliberately encourage the build up of fat in them.

The humps are usually a sign of dominance. And don't grow unless the fish is "in charge of the tank", with something it shows off to. Many adult male cichlids don't develop a nuchal hump for various reasons.
