how level do aquariums have to be?

jw -- coz my 29 gallon is unlevel by about 1/4 of an inch the long way accross

also is it safe to use glass cleaner on the outside of the aquarium

The Levelness of the tank is irrelivant as water is always going to be level..

It recomended that gravle slopes to the back as well to give depth. Only problem could be if you over fill the tank cos your not looking at the right side.

Could it slip? that would cause a problem.

I use glass cleaner on my tank - Spray it on the cloth not the tanks though so there is no way it will contaminate your water

The level of a tank definately does matter as if the tank is not level then the weight of the water is on the side of the tank that is lower.

Example;
If you could lift a full tank from one end then the full weight of the water would be on the glass at the other end and it would probably break under the pressure.

I think that you should be OK though as yours is out by only a small amount. :D :blink:

I have been told to never use glass cleaner that contains amonia, e.g. Windex. I always put vinager in a spray bottle then spray the cloth I am cleaning with then wipe off the glass.

The reason I was told not to use cleaner contain amonia is that it can permiate through the glass into the water.

You want the tank as level as possible, but 1/4" off won't cause any damage - it is still a slight strain to one side of the tank. If you can drain most of the water and get somebody to help you lift the one side and level it then you would be better off. If this is not possible then don't worry about it.

The reason I was told not to use cleaner contain amonia is that it can permiate through the glass into the water.

This is just a myth. Cleaners like windex are fine as long as it doesn't get into the tank.

Thanks for the responses.

my tank is empty right now ill see if i can find some way to level it out.
