How Hard Do You Think It Would Be To Make These?

Okay, so maybe you wouldn't have THAT many jars...but still...I have a 56 gal tall aquarium for my grow out tank, and I was thinking that if I could make these things to line the inside top of the tank, it would be better for them (constant water flow), and less cluttered for me. How hard do you really think it would be? It's just acrylic and suction cups, really....take a little aquarium sealer, and it should be alright...

Is that a bad idea?

I think to be honest, there cheap enough to buy. It would probably cost you a whole lot more to make them and be quite time consuming, although you could tailor them to any size you want.

i got one for when i first bred betta. the size is very deceptive, they are very small. they are well "ventilated" but they are very small. i wouldnt recoment them

I have to agree that they might actually be cheaper to buy than make (unless you were doing it in huge numbers)

I was actually thinking about using something like that to separate my first few feisty males from the rest of the bunch, so I could put off jarring for as long as possible. It does look like the fish wouldn't have much space, but it would probably be enough room for younger bettas.

I was planning to make them larger, but I went to Lowe's and priced plexiglass tonight...and there's no way I'm taking on this project. A little 8x10" sheet was $20!

I wouldn't reccomend the ones sold in shops, they are way too small for any fish.

is 20$ around £14 in sterling? not sure.

I was actually thinking of making my own breeding tanks using acrylic, the school i go to throw offcuts of clear acrylic away all the time ill have to start asking for them

It sounds a good idea and the fact you are thinking of making them bigger. that I am really pleased to hear as I feel those in your pic are far too small. i look at it this was "would you be happy in 4'X4' box?"
You found that the perspex way is too expensive how about looking for what they call plastic canvas. Now, this is is sold in sheets and looks like the material you can get to make rugs with but in plastic obviously.
This can be put together with sealant plus it would give you a much better flow of water as it has wholes all over.
Is this any good as an idea for you???

I'm getting one of those, untill I can get enough money for a newer 10 gallon to divide. I found one for 12$, and it looks big enough. My boys will go estatic, because it's the same tank I keep my females in.

If you want bigger 'cubes', then I'd just take plastic stacking things, put suction cups on them, and cut holes for vents. I saw some in a craft store. They're about 7" by 9". I'll bet it'd be cheaper.

I would just use some plastic mesh you can get at walmart or a hobby store.
Cut it so you can make the cubes however large you want, then use the sealant stuff to glue it all back together. Cheap, you know the water flow is going to be excellent b/c of the mesh and yah.. I'm sure probably not too hard to make
Plus suction cupping it shouldn't be too hard since the stuff already has holes in it and isn't very hard to cut if you need a larger hole for a suction cup.
Of course it's not going to be as something clear, but I think it would be cost effective.

i might like to ad, the holes in the deviders betwen compartments are large, and when i used them, the males that went into them were able to slip thru the holes, and then they would get stuck when a bit bigger, id advise not using them for young fish. i used it to sepreate two larger males on a temporary basis and still felt the space was too small

Would you not be able to take out the middle divider, and have two compartments per box? Oh, and i guess it would be ok for really young bettas, not the adults they have in the picture

these items are not safe and shouldnt be allowed on the market, i used to use these and found that when the suction cups failed on one side that side would drop into the water and the betta on that side drowned.

Thank you for posting this Daz, I was just about to post that my one huge fear would be the suction cups slipping down below a reachable surface. This has proved it can happen. Horrible things really. However, if you could adapt them to hang over the edge, that would work

Totaly Agree, I made the exact same mistake when i first started keeping bettas all those years ago. One side failed and they died - It was a HalfGiant Mustard Gas SD aswell that Died.

I have Made these and they are great. Got Crochet Mesh from Hobby craft and a packet of Suction cups. Then used Cable ties to attach it all together.
I made them 12 by 12 by 12 Square and are great for housing new fish to observe them or to seperate males and females.

I have some Pix of on of them somewhere. took no more than 20Mis from start to finish
