Depends on the LED... If they're full-spectrum high power ones yes. little 1/4 watt ones won't do much.

How long has your refugium been going? How fast does the algae in it grow?

well its been going for 2weeks now with no light and i got 4 waterproof leds yesterday the algea is a mixture with tubeworms and the person i bought it off said it doubled every week sound good?

Ive modified a desk lamp to fit on the inside of my tank cabinate and at the moment its using a 7 watt energy saving bulb that gives out about 60watts or so of light.

The colour rating is an important factor aswell, think most people go along the lines of 6500k colour rating.

I have pretty good growth from my light at the moment but i wouldnt say its fast enough to prune every other week so ime not gettin a 18w bulb which is 100watts output to realy get it growing.

bollands, the growth rate of the algea in your fuge will be directly linked to how much light and how many nutrients are present in your system for it. I get to remove some from mine about every two weeks(its chaeto) but the way I look at it is any growth and removal of the algea is more unwanted organics gone.
