How Does The Flow Work In An Aquaclear Hob?

So I know it's suppose to go bottom to top but from pictures it looks like water enters from the middle where the carbon is. So how does the water curculate into the sponge?

How do you have them stacked?

I junk the carbon, unless removing meds., and add a second sponge. I know my lowest sponge catches most of the gunk.

The piece that fits over the impeller and into which the intake U tube ends, directs the water coming in to go down the side of the media holder and it ends up under the holder. It then flows up through the media and out the return over flow.
