How do you tell if a SA puffer's beak is too long?

Okay... I finally managed to get Philip to eat snails, but I don't know if his beak's got too long or not - how do you tell?

He can't seem to catch his own snails - I've seen him trying - he pecks at them on the glass but they don't come off and he gives up! I got him to eat the snails by picking them off and crushing them up slightly for him - he still eats the shell. But I'm worried that his beak's got too long already while I was first trying to get him to eat them without success.

When at rest the beak should not be visible except perhaps for just the tips.

This is a South American with overgrown teeth..

Wow, mine are visible while swimming about and were when I purchased them, but nothing like that

I have recently moved them to the snail tank and reduced feeding and they love it, there are hundreds of baby snails in there. The smallest of the two is looking a little goofy and if I see him having a problem feeding I will start ringing round the local vets. I dont fancy going through that (doing it myself with clove oil I mean), though may have to.

Philip's teeth I think are just under half that length... he doesn't seem to have any trouble eating though.
Jon's descriptrion "goofy" fits Philip quite well...
