what about plumpness? I have a clown pleco that is very round so I think its a girl. Does girth have anything to do with it?

Sexing the common pleco is really tricky, but in some species the males tend to be smaller than the females and develop bigger barbells. Some sources claim that the chin barbells are somewhat smoother in females. The Bristlenose Catfish is fairly easy to sex since the females do not develop any "horns".on there nose

Your plecs have to be 4-5 years mature to be able to reproduce.Once you've done that then separate them from your other tankmates during breeding.
