According to the dictionary it's Bet-uh but I say Bait-uh because when i say it "the right way" people look at me like I'm saying it wrong :rolleyes:

You bet-a you bet-a you bet-a.... sorry, that song popped into my head as soon as I saw the poll....... I've gotten into bait-a and bet-a arguments with plenty of people, I just can't help it, there is no 'a' in the begining, it's a frickin 'e'!!! Sound it out. Ah well, as long as they take good care of it they can call if Fluffy for all I care...

I have the same problem as Auratus. The way I see it, most foreign words aren't said quite the way they're said in their countries of origin... in fact sometimes when I hear people going out of their way to say various words the foreign way it sounds kind of pretentious to me... like they're trying to pretend they aren't from here and they're more worldly than those around them. I've never once heard someone say "bet-a" in person, so anything else sounds strange to me. Maybe someday I'll just force myself to start saying it the right way *shrug*.

As long as there are two 't's there shouldn't be an 'a' sound. If you were saying 'beta' as in the Greek alphabet or whatever then there could be a dispute :p

i don't think it's pretentious to try to say it the way it's supposed to be pronounced. most people don't even try, thats pretty arrogant IMO.

It's pronounced like "beta" but short "be" (not beeeeeeta) and with two "t".

I bet your tank is absolutely gorgeous!

=> bet-ta

For me, it's easy to pronounce those names, because they are pronounced in finnish in same way as in latin. Well, hmm... almost...
