Females are usually larger and have a fuller body than males.

there are 4 of them. 3 look about the same size and a little fater, the one that is smaller is a little more slim but is geting left out. Could this be the male? also are there any other ways to tell?

alright thanks heaps i am pretty sure the one being left out is the male they do swim together but after a while the slimmer one tends to wonder around the bottom of the tank alone and not join in with the other 3 fatter fish but after a while he will rejoin then stop. is there anyway to make the presumed male feel more apart of the group as the tank only has these 4 fish at the moment if i bu 4 more of these fish do you think that would be wise and if so would i get 3 females and 1 male or what would you suggest? you buy them in groups of 4

another question is how would you determine if a female is pregnant due to them already being larger and have a more fuller shape to them?

If you are going to condition the fish to breed them (feed them lots of protein rich food, quality foods, live foods) the differences should become unmistakable. The females will get a very distinct full belly look (adults can carry hundreds of eggs, they have to fit somewhere), while the males will look full (healthy) but not anywhere close to the females. The females bellies can appear lighter in color, sometimes with a pinkish tint.

okay thank you... so how can you determine whether a female is pregnant if they are already a full figure?? i purchased 4 more danios from the same store i got the other four from and they seem really happy now, swimming around, i fed them some blood worms that they really enjoyed. can u suggest any other forms of beneficial foods i can feed them besides there fish food and blood worms?

firstly, egglaying fish do not become pregnant, the correct term is gravid (egg laden)

ok now to your question.
the female when gravid will look to you like she is about to explode,
you will be very concerned at just how big she is in comparison the the others.

thank you heaps. can u suggest any food or treats that would be beneficial for my fish?
