get a container, like a plastic box that has a lid stick a tube into it with a airline in it and then fill the rest of the box with filter media!! Simple.

in my books anything that invloves a airpump isn't quite either as you have the bubbles popping at the surface which makes quite a noise.

could i get like a ice cream tub with a load of used gravel and some sponges that have been in fish tanks for a while and what else will i need ot do

I make them from powerheads. You can put them horizontal on the bottom to act similar to undergravel jets, or vertical to create more surface agitation. Totally silent as long as you don't use the air venturi.

Excellent idea Tolak, can the intake/outflow be regulated on that particular Powerhead. The reason I'm asking is that my LFS ( who haven't got a clue about fishkeeping) have powerheads installed in 24"x12"x12" stock tanks and the fish are going around like they were in a washing machine. I like this idea very much and would use it if I can get a Powerhead that can be regulated.

Heres one i made in my discus tank, a flow through filter.

I used perspect sheet and aquarium safe silicon to build it you could use scrounged glass.

The filter medium is alfogrog its about £3 a small bag, and then some foam and filter floss to top that off.

The hole thing is run with a small water feature pump which is retured to the tank via a spray bar.
