I have a fair amount of LR, but i know i need more. The local pet store sells small medium and large...not by the pound.

So how can i tell what i have and what i am getting pound wise?

Are there any little tricks? Like a handful=a pound?

What we have to do is figure out what kind of LR your store is selling. They vary by density. The denser the rock, the more you'll need to occupy the same amount of space, a less dense rock will need.

For example, my Haitian rock is very light and porous, so I don't need as much, with regard to pounds, to create a good surface area for bacteria growth. On the other hand, Florida Cultured rock is much heavier. Fiji rock and Marshal Islands rock are also lighter.

Go for lighter, yet larger pieces. You want surface area, that's what you need, rather than size.

Odd they don't sell it by the pound. lljdma is right, it's too variable to usually tell just by looking at it.
Bring your own portable scale? :p

Well i do have a portable scale that i use for sport fishing and establishing state records and such (I only hold one, but i plan to change that =p)

Why does it not surprise me that you have one. Take it to the store then? How much can it weigh?

Will they let you rummage around in the rock bin yourself given that they don't weigh it themselves? If you are committed to getting that place's rock, like lljdma said, just go for the lightest bunch you can pick out. If you're trying to figure out whether they're ripping you off price wise, that's another matter of course. It really is rather odd to just have size bins for LR, although I have seen dry, carved tufa sold that way. The only time I've seen LR not sold by the pound are for "showpiece" type rocks that have more critter value than the rock is worth really.

took my scale to the store, and they did not object.

The stuff was about $5 a pound...not terrible

Wait, I'm confused, this is LR, right? Like in water, right?

Ok, because when you were saying sorting through bins, I was thinking like dry rock.

Yeah, $5 a pound for cured Fiji ain't bad. :good:

And again, where are the pictures??? Get to it!
