It's called Java Moss. You'll need some bogwood for it to stick to.

In the meantime, you can buy an artificial mat of sort of grass stuff for this situation called a breeding mat. You put the mat on the bottom of the tank and the fry can hide in the stalks. "Grows" instantly, whereas my experience of Java Moss was that it too an age.

Here's a picture of the stuff they sell on the Aquarium Supplies UK site:

It's not natural, but it is cheap and cheerful and most importantly, works. In fact, I must get me some for my cherry barbs.

Another suggestion while you wait for plants to grow - get a couple of new plastic pot scrubbers... you know... the little round ones. Pour some boiling water over them to sterilize them, stretch them out a little and twist or wring them a bit (they don't hold a shape very well, but they should contort a little bit). Stick them in your tank. Let one float and weight the other one down with a little rock. The babies will hide inside them. It works; I've done it!

Definatly get something that will save your babies now. Also get some java moss growing. I highly recommend java moss for anyone that breeds. It contains micro-bugs that your babies will munch on. Very healthy for the little critters.

Get some plants with fine leaves like Hornwort and float them in our tank. These provide hiding places for the fry.

Works for my tank
