Pictures are a breeze once you catch on. First take that picture. Next put it on your PC and make it the size that you want. For an avatar that is quite small but editing software will "re-size" to almost any final size. Crop before doing any other editing so that you don't end up with a picture smaller than it needs to be. I try to keep mine as big as a site allows so that I don't lose too much detail or clarity. Once you have an image the right size, upload it to an on line site like photobucket that will give you some free storage space. Next follow the directions for your forum for setting an avatar. On TFF that means providing the URL of your stored image when prompted under the "Edit my Profile" "Change Avatar" tabs. Note that the maximum size is 120 horizontal or vertical pixels and maximum file size is 21k. If you enter something outside those dimensions it simply will not change.
If you do not have picture editing software, I got mine as a part of my Microsoft Office package, sites like photobucket will let you edit a stored picture, so you could upload a raw picture from your phone or camera and then use their site to make it the right size, adjust brightness, etc. to use it as an avatar.
