is there a sure way to tell gender of bettas other than finage

Try getting the betta to flare - females will flare as well as males. If the beard is only at the side of the head, it's female. If the beard goes under the 'chin' as well, it's male.

Females have a white spot on their bellies - but so can young males. That's why it isn't a 100% method.
