How Do I Cover Knock Out Holes On Tank Hood?

I have been using a sponge filter for about two years because external filter need for me to pull the knock outs on my hood out, but i was wondering, what will i do if i ever need to change to a sponge filter due to mating, etc. I've heard tape could help, but i don't know i might have to replace the tape over and over right?
