Hi there,

We have got 2 Comets (1 orange, 1 silver-orange) in a 10 gallon tank.
They are small (1.5 inches) at the moment, very happy and alert :)
We've cycled the tank before we got them, feed them every other day, water is fine and so are they

Had I done my homework on here rather than giving in to my son we would have gone for something else,
but we will keep them until they are big enough to be rehomed to a friend who keeps them in a large garden pond

However, we don't really want any babies, but I can't seem to find reliable information as to how to tell boy from girl ... can you guys help?
I could post photos if that helps :)

Look at their vent and if it's an "innie" it's a girl, if it's an "outie" it's a boy. :) It may be too hard to tell on the small fish at the moment though :(

The adult male has white spots (resembling pimples) on his Gill plates as well on the first ray of his dorsal fin...... he is also less plump than a female...

(and I'm moving this topic to Coldwater fish and ponds)

Yes, they are quite small and as we are quite inexperienced I wouldn't want to cause them stress by taking them out of the water and holding them belly up just yet. But I will keep that in mind for the future, thanks :)

Thanks - found the thread here

It seems that one of them is developing a white raised spot on the first ray of the dorsal fin (we were actually wondering if he had hurt himself :D), but the other one is smaller and younger, so we might not know for a while yet.
