at my lfs they have about 10 silver aros about 3" long
one of them is much darker than the rest and has strong hint of blue
is it possible it is a black aro?
is there a way to tell the difference?

I thought black aros look extremely different when they are younger being jet black with a long yellow stripe and stripe around the head, they change considerably when they grow. Silver aros are normally silver when they are young.

as mlawson says, black arowanas really are black when there young.

here's one off a quick google image search

black aros are a lot slimmer than silver aros and the black aros anal and dorsal fins blend into the tail more a silver you can see it has a tail a black looks more like a fether

the pic paul posted is what young black aros look like upto around 4-5inch

if a black aro has gone throw the black and white stage it will be just black/blue with a bright yellow/orange on the edges of its anal and dorsal fins

this is why we dont see any baby so called blue aros for sale why because they are black

once the black aro gets to 5-7 inch they go throw the blue stage all black aros go throw the blue stage

anyone who knows their aros well will tell you their is no such thing as a blue SA aro its just a way to kick up the price and get passed the export ban from brazil

black aros are great and even at the crazy price they are selling for now labeled as blue they are still a great fish

i paid £25 for mine and kept it for 7 yrs i have seen them selling from £120-£240

When i was at wildwoods last week they had some 8-10" 'blue' arowanas selling for a whopping £239 each, i paid £70 for mine at about the same size just after christmas.

Please tell me a black arro is at least legal in the US

Seems like all the good stuff is banned. BTW, how do you all know this, is there a site out there that I can find the list of import bans on fish... just to know what I can and can't get in the US. Thanks.

Sorry to the OP for hijacking the thread, but it might be useful to them as well

Is there a list or a site I can go to find this stuff out? I find it sad that people in other countries know the export and import laws better than I do for my own country  . Any help in finding this site would be helpful.

Seen two silvers in the local yesterday, they have a reddish and yellow spot on them tho and a reddish tinge all over. Is this normal for a young silver?

why don't you make one, an australian member was doing the same a few weeks back as fish imports/exports are quite heavily regulated in oz.

search your governments websites, you may need to fire off a few e-mails to people but it should be easy enough to find out. but if you get a list why not post it up for fellow forum members :good:
