maybe its fine, i dunno but.. it says its completely sealed.. a gimmick or is it fine, i have never kept shrimp so i dont know anything about them, but if they got sick or died then what do you do?

spelling on it is dodgy and its says that the tank has been tested by NASA hmmmm ( maybe they wernt busy with buzz lightyear that day :hyper: )

its not the sort of thing that would interest me for all of the above reasons. but what do you think, is it suitable for the purpose or what??

I cant see it being too good...

surely ammonia would build up?

My sister actually has one, its not perfect but not as bad as you probably think. I was a little worried when she first got it but she has had hers for about a year now and the shrimp look happy enough. They were developed by Nasa as part of research on closed ecosystems to help them plan for long space flights.

The shrimp inside are a Hawaiian shrimp from extreme brackish water that I've forgotten the name of :p They look like baby Cherry Shrimp. They grow to about 0.5cm and feed on the algae that builds up on the glass.

Because of the extreme water conditions in their natural home they are extremely hardy little shrimp. I'm sure they claim there is something special in the gravel to help with the break down of waste and the algae removes some but because there are only 4 shrimp in there there isn't that much waste to process anyway.

That all said for how much they cost new (£50/60) you could set up a small tank with cherry shrimp which would be a lot more interesting.

Yessum... they seem like an overpriced gimmick to me. I'd rather get a 10gal tank with all the works and a breeding group of cherries for £60!

I have 2 of these, I got them because i wanted fish but my husband said no.... these seemed ideal instead, no maintenance!
My shrimp are very lively little things, so much fun to watch them eating! Very expensive though..... and now I have my fish, they have gone to live on my desk in work because they just weren't getting any attention at home! Everyone in my office comes to peer at them :p Mine are from a reputable company in Germany, the booklet that came with is was in perfect English :) Though there are now rip off copies of them! There are micro organisms living in there that help to process the waste and my shrimp seem very healthy. Only problem I ever had was one winter, i went away for a week and when i returned my house was like a freezer, and some of the shrimp had died of cold. That's another reason they now live in my office, the temperature never drops in there!
I prefer my fishies though :p

the link you've shown looks like a bit of a dodgy rip off version, but the original ones which are significantly more expensive than that are quite good, shrimp give off very little ammonia and the proper ones have plants in which provide filtration and oxygenation.

they wont live forever but you can get a couple of years from them with no detriment to the fish

How do they get the shrimp and water in there??? ;)

I never really thought about it, and have no idea!

I'll have a look at my sisters next week if you want me to and try to work it out. She is on holiday so i'm watering her plants!

yes you do that !! it will be soo interesting,, i think like miss wiggle said these are the knock off versions

I'm pretty sure they form the bowl with a very small opening, add everything in, and then slowly heat the opening and form it shut (slowly because too much and the water will heat up and kill the shrimp).

I bought one of these when I was in elementary school. Cost me a year's allowance, but hey - my parents wouldn't let me have pets, and I figured this wouldn't count since they didn't need to buy food and it was very unlikely to pee on the sofa.

The shrimp lasted about a year and a half, but the plant in it lasted quite a while after that. If you look closely, you may find a spot with slightly different texture to the glass, which would be where it was sealed.

looks very interesting, but what a lot of money for it..... its a hot day, dont the plants need water?? get over there and tell us how its done, oh and take the camera!

Your supposed to keep it out of direct sunlight to stop the temperature changing too much, and because its a closed system there is no evaporation problems :p I'll try and get some good pics for you.

They look like knock-offs, I actually saw these for sale in the American Museum of Natural History after visiting an exhibit about water.
