hi all
long question here for u all, how does a male betta tell a female from a male?
because if a male see's another male he wants to go ruff him up lol but if he see's a female he wants to make love and many babys by makeing a nest.
well i could under stand all the long fin male knowing who is who but what about plakats? how does he tell male from female? maybe colour? ahhhh but what if both males were white? and the females are white?
maybe its the gills but ive had and do have females that flair at males and wanna beat them up.
so can anyone give me a strate ancer to this coz its been on my mind all day and nite.
thanks :)

The females probably release a pheremone into the water or something. -_- Good question......

I guess the same way you and i can tell a girl from boy human! lol. Fishes are so full of character >_<

can you tell...............it is the way in the way the fish reacts the instant, when they see each other another male will react in the same manner as him a female will first want to get away quote Lol, mine can't. I've got Hannibal and my girly about a foot away from each other, she's got vertical stripes and he want kill her... Ah, young love he wants to spawn is the possible reason and will go frantic to get to her which may look like he wants to kill, but as i say her first reaction would not be to flare but at some stage during that first encounter she may flair at him back but it don't last long, were another male will flair straight away its like us if we like some one it brings a smile if we something we don't like we pull a face but its that initial moment of contact........... :D

It's my understanding they don't "know" until you put them in the water together and the female is ready to breed.

Because males and females will flare madly at each other while in seperate containers.

But the female will not let the male close unless she is ready to drop eggs.

I think it also may have something to do with body posture and/or a chemical release...when the female is ready to drop eggs.

omg well that have solved it for me lol it will stop driveing me mad now lol.
i used to have a female that would beat a male almost to death she was a PKDT right nasty peice of work she was the only male i had who could put her in her place was a crowntail who was nasteyr than she was and showed her who was boss

Oi, thats my post Bettaman :grr: Yep, you're right though, I thought I'd introduce them when I was changing their water, he went a bit loopy, she did a tiiiny flare back, then he calmed down a bit. The females look pretty spectacular when they're really striped up though. BTW, I'm not going to breed, they're both VT's and I don't have room or cash

If I can tell males from females, I'm sure the fish can do the same
