Hi
I'm not sure how easy Black Phantom tetras are to breed but I had mine in a community set up for two weeks and they started spawning, though all the eggs were quickly consumed.
They are the easiest of tetras to tell apart. The males have a longer dorsal fin and all the fins are black the females have some red on the lower fins. photos at
http/tropicalfishgallery.com/species-gal...galopterus.html female is the bottom pic males the top two.
They are best kept in small shoals of 4 or more (I have 7 comprising two males and 5 females) with more females than males. The males will display to the females and each other by flaring their fins and chasing the females (who give as good as they get.)
What I am going to try is to set up a spawning tank with plenty of cover for the eggs (spawning mops can be made easily from nylon wool see
http/mike-edwardes.members.beeb.net/ask.html#15 for instructions) feed the fish up on some good quality freeze dried and frozen food and when they look like getting frisky transfer a couple of plump females and a male to the precycled spawning tank and see how it goes. The fry apparently need infusoria to begin with then brine shrimps. There is a good description of the process at
http/www.gsas.org/Articles/1998/black-phantom.html
My tank is a rio 125 (33Us Gal) with 3 guppies and 7 black phantoms water parameters are 0 ammonia and nitrite, 10ppm nitrate pH6.5. not sure what the hardness is like but round here the water is pretty hard.
If I get any results I'll post them up.
Cheers
