So I just picked up two new girls from WalMart today... they were there for a pretty long time (but the males get bought up so fast, poor little girls) and they're just so cute. And my WalMart NEVER has females.

But they are SO tiny. Seriously, like 1/3-1/2 the size of my boys!! They can't even fit food pellets in their mouths. Is this normal? What's the average size of female bettas? Do you think these girls might just be young? If they are abnormally small, do you think they'll be okay in a tank with other girls?

Sorry, I've had no experience with females except for photos online. :*)

IME female bettas grow to about 2-2.5". by the sound of it they are either runts or were shipped out to walmart before they grew to much. i have a CT female that was the size that you describe. i also got her from walmart. she has since grown to a "normal" size for a female to be for retail. just give her time she will grow and will pick at the food pellets to eat them. if she doesn't eat them, i.e. just can't fit them in her mouth, i noticed that bettas WILL eat flake foods so just give her some of those. or use bloodworms or other live or frozen foods. EVERY fish (IME) loves live or frozen foods. well good luck!

i hoped that i helped and anytime you need help you can pm me and i will try my best to help with any other questions.

Generally with bettas, males aren't sold until they're 6months- a year old so they're bigger, more colourful, bigger fins etc, and more appealing to customers. Females aren't expected to be flashy or have long fins, so the sooner they can be sold, the more room for more spawns. Some females are pretty big, but most are weeny.

That totally makes sense but I hadn't thought of it... thanks OohFeeshy. :)
